Decorate to please yourself

I’m feeling so inspired! Which is a big deal, because I’ve been in a bit of a rut lately. (Forgive me for my lack of posts!) Anyway, I’ve been feasting my eyes on so many gorgeous spaces lately. From the iconic rooms by Bunny Williams and Eddie Ross to the seriously-awesome case studies on One King’s Lane and Apartment Therapy–I’ve been so ramped up to liven up our home. Time to inject some life and personality!ย  The theme (or mantra) for me at the moment actually came from Bunny Williams: “If you love it, it goes”. Our homes are for us to enjoy, truly.

Don’t be afraid of color

Can you believe I’m saying that? My friends are starting to actually call me ‘beige’ as a nickname. I can’t be having that! I’m having so much fun bringing in color bit by bit. I’m still cautious, of course, but when something feels right and I just love it, then I know it’s worth a try. I want to buy only things that bring us joy and then watch our home come to life. For me, the color is starting with art and fresh flowers. Both make a space feel lived in and vibrant. I want both of those things in my house! You could also play with adding color through window treatments, cushions, vases and accessories. Look at these beautiful spaces that are full of color but remain easy on the eye:

Pattern: the token fun element

Some of my favorite designed rooms have expertly combined patterns. Some designers are bolder and braver than others, but I tend to love combinations that make the room feel organic, lived in and worldly. Like these:

Juxtaposition

Mixing old and new is nothing new to me, I’ve always loved the effect it has in our house. You start to really learn about the people who live in the space when you observe their accessories. Interjecting new and polished with vintage and timeless creates an infectious vibration that makes you want to see more. Not every piece has to be precious or have a unique story, though I love those things, sometimes it’s okay to have something simply because it spoke to you and it displays your personality. That’s what decorating is all about! Self-expression. Frame a quirky or humorous piece of modern art in a vintage gold frame. Add a glossy Lucite tray to an old leather ottoman. The possibilities are utterly endless.

Take risks

You have to experiment in order to educate your eye and find your personal style. Not everything will work, but that is okay. Those quirky pieces that you introduce to your room are the unexpected treasures that keep you interested and guests intrigued. Not everything has to make sense or be pretty. Silly and nonsensical can add a new layer of beauty because it gives your home life. The more you try, the more new perspectives you will gain.

A gift for you

I dipped my toes into this new decor space by adding these vintage-inspired prints to our living room. This corner previously had a simple black-framed mirror. That was pretty and it worked, but it didn’t exactly bring any personality to the room. I created these prints because butterflies and moths have a special meaning in our family. I chose the colors that well-suited our tastes but were not my typical go-to color: blue. I hope you enjoy them as a surprise gift! You can download both prints below and display them in any room you feel needs a little pattern or color. Remember, if you love it, it goes! XO
